This is a very important message. As you may have seen in our previous emails or on social media, our WYD Chapter Secretary Christine Peters is running for Westchester County Legislature in a Special Election on Tuesday, August 9th. That’s just FIVE days away. This special election was caused by the resignation of longtime Republican Bernice Spreckman and was timed specifically to reduce turnout by having it in the dead of summer.
The Republican candidate, David Tubiolo, worked as Bernice’s legislative assistant and has been groomed to succeed her for years. In addition, his mother works for Tea Party County Executive Rob Astorino and his father is the Chairman of the Yonkers Republican Party. This obliterates any potential notion of political independence that even Bernice sometimes displayed in her earlier years on the Board of Legislators.
Looking at the County Legislature as a whole, while Democrats have a slim 9-8 advantage, 2 of those Democrats side with the 8 Republicans on many important issues — including calling this special election when nobody is expected to be around or voting! That’s why winning this seat is so important. And why your help can make a difference. With so few people expected to vote, touching 5 or 10 voters by knocking on doors, making phone calls, or handing out literature may help Christine win this election.
If you can, please join us for several GOTV (Get Out The Vote) activities for Christine this weekend. The campaign office is right around the block from the Mt Vernon West Metro North station. Reply to this email to RSVP and/or you can also contact the campaign directly (Amy at 917-660-7620) to help outside of these times. You can also make a donation to Christine’s campaign here. So come out & volunteer, make a donation, and don’t forget to let family & friends in the district know to #PickPeters on this Tuesday, August 9th!
Are you #WithHer? Well, join WYD tonight at the Westchester Dems HQ to watch Presidential nominee Hillary Clinton address the 2016 Democratic National Convention. And closer to home, we also want you to be #WithHer as you #PickPeters to be the newest Westchester County Legislator in the 14th District Special Election being held on Tuesday, August 9th!
This summer, coming to a legislative district near you, a blockbuster event you won’t want to miss — Special Election: Westchester Edition.
Last month, longtime Republican County Legislator (14th District) Bernice Spreckman resigned her seat, setting up a heated race to succeed her, while just last night, a nominating convention held to pick the Democratic candidate chose our very own WYD Secretary Christine Peters! Christine ran a very spirited, close-fought race against Bernice last November, and is looking to do the same this summer.
The Republican-IDC coalition on the Board of Legislators called for a Special Election in the dead of summer (on Tuesday, August 9th, just over a month away) to minimize turnout and cost taxpayers an estimated $100,000 instead of scheduling it jointly with the September primary. As such, Christine will need all hands on deck. To get involved you can e-mail info@ChristinePeters.org or come out tonight to her campaign kickoff event/fundraiser in Yonkers!
In addition to showing solidarity with the labor movement for May Day by marching in solidarity with CWA, WYD is also hosting a Labor Speaker’s Forum this week.
We may be getting snow on the first day of Spring, but that won’t keep us from a busy few weeks including Westchester organizing meetings for the Sanders (3/21 @ 7PM, 44 Clarewood Dr, Hastings) & Clinton (3/22 @ 6PM, Vintage Lounge, 171 Main St, White Plains) campaigns, our general meeting this Thursday with representatives from both campaigns, and our Women’s History Month Panel.
Our chapter election is this Thursday, February 4th, and with nominations closed, there is no opposition for any office. Therefore the 2016 Westchester Young Democrats Executive Committee will be President George Kevgas, Vice President Brendan Monahan, Secretary Christine Peters, and Treasurer Euthimios ‘ET’ Theotokatos.
Happy New Year and welcome to 2016! In what’s sure to be an exciting year with the presidential race this November, we’ll be kicking off the year with our very own chapter election on Thursday, February 4th. If you’re interested in running for one of the four officer positions (President, Vice President, Treasurer, and Secretary) please submit your interest to the outgoing Executive Committee at ExCom@WestchesterYoungDems.org by next Thursday, January 14th.
Election Day in Westchester had some highs and lows, including several young candidates winning: Mt Vernon City Councilman & Mayor-Elect Richard Thomas, New Rochelle City Councilman & former WYD Vice President Jared Rice, Yonkers City Councilman & WYD Board Member Christopher Johnson, Ossining Village Trustee-Elect & WYD Board Member Quantel Bazemore. WYD Member Christine Peters also had a strong but ultimately unsuccessful showing in her campaign for County Legislature. That loss was mirrored by a very close race against Sheila Marcotte and the loss of Peter Harckham’s seat, leaving the Democrats on the Board of Legislators with a slim 9-8 majority. In such a low turnout year, never forget that your vote counts!
